Ces panaches glac\u00e9s ont \u00e9t\u00e9\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap051205.html\">d\u00e9couverts<\/a>\u00a0par les instruments de la\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cassini%E2%80%93Huygens#Spacecraft_design\">sonde spatiale Cassini<\/a>\u00a0lors de survols d&rsquo;Encelade en 2005. L&rsquo;origine de l&rsquo;eau alimentant ces fontaines de glace reste un sujet de recherche. Elle pourrait provenir d&rsquo;une vaste mer souterraine, ou encore de glace fondue par\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tidal_heating\">malaxage gravitationnel<\/a>\u00a0le long des parois de failles profondes.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov\/catalog\/PIA17184\">Sur cette image<\/a>, la surface tourment\u00e9e d&rsquo;Encelade appara\u00eet au premier plan, tandis que des rang\u00e9es de fontaines de glace s&rsquo;\u00e9l\u00e8vent de zones fractur\u00e9es \u00e0 l&rsquo;arri\u00e8re plan. Ces fontaines sont rendues particuli\u00e8rement visibles du fait de\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap120208.html\">l&rsquo;angle d&rsquo;\u00e9clairage<\/a>\u00a0que permettait la position de Cassini.
